VORTICE

Vetrerie di Empoli dedicates its Vortice catalogue to the Italian mathematician Fibonacci. The Fibonacci sequence is found practically everywhere in nature. The formula, discovered by the medieval scientist in the 13th century, is reproduced in the spiral of the Nautilus shell, in the arrangement of seeds in a sunflower and in the petals of many other flowers, but it is also found in works of art, in the façade of the Parthenon in Athens, even in Leonardo’s Mona Lisa. But perhaps most surprising is its presence in the human body, for example in the golden ratio of the face, and also in the span of the shoulders. The VORTICE catalogue illustrates the technological collections of VdE: two original design patents – Ikebana and Gira e Rigira – and other primarily amusing collections whose engineering is surprisingly deft. It takes years of work to achieve perfect harmony between mathematical function and form: research and development and much dedication devoted to these objects by our in-house work team. In 2018 the Gira e Rigira wine glass was selected by the jury panel of the prestigious ADI DESIGN INDEX and shortlisted for the Award Compasso d’Oro.

GIRA E RIGIRA

"Gira e Rigira" is an innovative tasting glass: that twist of the wrist when the wine is poured into the glass, to delicately swirl the liquid in order to analyze it, is updated by this mechanism, patented by Vetrerie di Empoli. A small pin "camouflaged" by the crystal, or else highlighted in golden metal, runs from the top of the stem to the base of the cup, so that with a delicate motion of the thumb it is made to rotate gently, swirling the wine in the glass. The swirling motion makes for a more accurate evaluation of the visual aspects, the olfactory notes and the components of the taste of the wine. Gira e Rigira' lets you decant the wine naturally, while conversing with your fellow diners, without the slightest embarrassment or feeling of awkwardness." Gira e Rigira was published in the ADI Design Index 2018 and was shortlisted for the Compasso d'Oro, the world's most important design award. From Expo 2021 in Dubai, it toured until 2025 with the Mostra Italia Geniale.

IKEBANA

Imagine to be able to create your own glass: take the base, screw in the stem and on this screw in the cup you prefer or add one more stem to make it higher: this is IKEBANA, the patent system we did in 2001 to give you the joy to change, to create, to innovate the way to set your table: from minimal to baroque, with the same base, only the cup changes and the glass takes on a different style. At that time, we also advertised the need to "limit waste" because each part is replaceable and can be reordered in case of breakage: your glass will be brand new and perfect again, today this is called sustainability.
